Couldn't make it to the first Midwest Monsters Campout? Maybe just didn't feel comfortable staying overnight with three dudes who talk about scary movies? Well, you are in luck because you can catch up on at least some of the fun here in this episode! Join us as we talk about urban legends, especially in our neck of the woods....

Episode 33 - Monster Mash III Afterthoughts

If you haven’t noticed yet, writing afterthoughts on the “mash” episodes is a little difficult to approach. With a franchise it is somewhat easy to initiate it by feelings of worth and its progression entry by entry. Even a theme like werewolves for instance is a vast topic to pick something to mention further. However, when you just cover three movies it is a little difficult to have much to say when you had plenty of time to cover each film during the episode.

The third installment of the mash was a fun one as all three movies were sound films and not a chore to get through. Mask Maker suffered a little bit with a return viewing but is still a good movie and one that is recommended by all three of us. Attack the Block, I enjoyed a lot (although not as much as my two co-hosts it seems) but either way I liked it. But the one I just wanted to touch again on was my selection, Session 9.

Session 9 gets better with every viewing. It is rich in atmosphere, the acting is solid, the production value is good (especially for an independent film), and the layered writing is a treat. What makes Session 9 great, other than its basic execution of horror tropes, is it’s ability to not be pigeon-holed into a category. It has many different angles of horror ranging from slasher to potential possession and back. Never at any point does it lean fully on the conventions of any one of these sub-genres.

It is in fact, its own movie.

In this young century thus far, that is a rarity we should all embrace.

Until next time

Beware the moon,

The Professor
